There is something very satisfying about seeing a medicinal plant go from the soil, through harvest and processing, to a finished herbal tincture — all on the same site.

At Rutland Biodynamics, we grow and process a wide range of medicinal herbs on our biodynamic farm. In this short video, you can see our team harvesting Urtica root directly from the farm before it is taken for processing into a herbal tincture in our onsite cGMP manufacturing facility.

Harvesting Urtica root at the right time

The quality of a herbal tincture starts long before the plant reaches the manufacturing facility.  For root preparations such as Urtica root, careful harvesting is essential. Our experienced farm team harvests the roots when they are ready, taking care to handle the plant material appropriately from the moment it is lifted from the soil.

Our approach is built around knowing exactly where our herbs have come from and how they have been grown. Because the farm and manufacturing facility are located together, we can maintain a high level of traceability from the field through to the finished product.

From freshly harvested root to herbal tincture

Once harvested, the Urtica root is brought into our processing operation. The plant material then undergoes the appropriate preparation and extraction process to produce the herbal tincture.  The aim is to provide a carefully manufactured herbal extract while maintaining control over every stage of production.  This farm-to-tincture approach gives us an unusual level of visibility over the raw material. We know where the plant was grown, how it was cultivated, when it was harvested and how it was processed.

Why traceability matters in herbal medicine

Traceability is particularly important when working with medicinal herbs.  Every stage of the process can have an influence on the final product, from cultivation and harvesting through to extraction, filling and quality control.  At Rutland Biodynamics, our biodynamic farm and cGMP manufacturing facility are located on the same site. This creates a direct link between cultivation and manufacture that is unusual within herbal medicine production.  Our farm currently grows around 80 medicinal herbs, providing us with extensive experience in cultivating, harvesting and processing botanical raw materials.

Manufacturing in our onsite cGMP facility

Following harvesting and preparation, Urtica root can be processed into a herbal tincture within our own cGMP manufacturing facility.  Manufacturing under cGMP principles provides a controlled environment for producing herbal preparations, with documented processes and appropriate quality controls.  Our onsite laboratory also allows batches to undergo quality testing before release.  This means the journey of the herb does not simply end when it leaves the field — the raw material continues through a controlled manufacturing and quality process until it becomes the finished tincture.

Farm to bottle — with traceability at every stage

For us, producing herbal tinctures is about more than simply extracting a plant.  It is about understanding the plant from the moment it is grown, making informed decisions about harvesting and processing, and maintaining control throughout manufacture.

Farm → Harvest → Processing → Extraction → Quality Control → Finished Tincture

That is the advantage of having a biodynamic medicinal herb farm and a cGMP manufacturing facility together on one site.
