SQUILL OXYMEL

For this winter, we have introduced a popular old cough medicine called Squill Oxymel BP, under codes 0538H and 0538L.
Oxymels are honey infused tinctures. The cardiae glycosides in Squill (which were used used for centuries in traditional medicine for treatment of jaundice and asthma and more recently to treat heart failure and arrhythmia) are in fact degraded by ethanol and so the Squill tincture in the Squill Oxymel BP is made in vinegar, or acetic acid.
The honey not only counteracts the sour taste but is also a carminative to the throat. Squill Oxymel BP was an official medicine of the British Pharmacopoeia (BP) and highly popular for many decades when herbal were strong in official medicine and is still used throughout the world. Squill is actually the common name for a group of plants but the species in our Squill Oxymel BP is Drimia maritima (syn Urginea maritima).
