A Golden Harvest: This Year’s Hypericum
Every growing season tells its own story. Some years challenge us, while others reward patience, careful stewardship and trust in nature’s rhythms. This year’s Hypericum harvest has been one of celebration.
Our biodynamic fields have produced an abundant crop of healthy, vibrant Hypericum, with plants reaching their peak at exactly the right moment for harvesting. After the disappointments of last season, this year’s harvest has exceeded our expectations and reminds us just how resilient both nature and biodynamic farming can be.
Learning from Last Year
Last year’s harvest was one of the most difficult we’ve experienced. An exceptionally wet winter left our fields saturated for prolonged periods. When soils become waterlogged, the chemistry of the soil changes. In these oxygen-poor conditions, ferric iron (Fe³⁺) is reduced to ferrous iron (Fe²⁺), which is much more soluble. Elevated levels of soluble ferrous iron can be harmful to many plants, including Hypericum, affecting root health and overall growth. As a result, last year’s crop was greatly reduced. Farming medicinal herbs means working with nature rather than against it. Every season teaches us something about the intimate relationship between soil, weather and the plants we cultivate.
Nature’s Balance Restored
This season has been entirely different. Healthier soil conditions and a more favourable growing season have allowed our Hypericum to flourish. The fields have been full of strong, healthy plants covered in their brilliant golden flowers—a wonderful sight and a rewarding harvest for everyone involved. The abundance of this year’s crop is a testament to the resilience of healthy biodynamic soils and the remarkable ability of plants to thrive when conditions are right.
Harvested at Its Peak
The quality of a herbal tincture begins long before it reaches the laboratory. We harvest our Hypericum only when it has reached its optimum stage of growth, when the plant is expressing its fullest vitality. Each harvest is timed carefully and carried out with respect for both the plant and the rhythms of the season.
From Field to Tincture—On the Same Day
One of the defining features of our medicines is the speed with which the freshly harvested herbs are transformed into tinctures. Our fields sit alongside our cGMP and MHRA-approved manufacturing laboratory. As soon as the Hypericum is harvested, it is taken directly for maceration on the very same day. There is no prolonged storage, no unnecessary transport and no delay between harvest and extraction.
By preparing our tinctures from freshly harvested herbs immediately after cutting, we aim to preserve the freshness and living character of the plant, capturing its vitality at the moment it is at its very best.
