Growing Ashwagandha with Care, Traceability and Quality at Rutland Biodynamics

At Rutland Biodynamics, we believe that the quality of a herbal tincture begins long before it reaches the manufacturing facility. It starts with the soil, the way the plant is grown, and the care taken at every stage from cultivation to finished product.

Withania somnifera, commonly known as ashwagandha, is an important medicinal plant valued in traditional herbal medicine. At Rutland Biodynamics, we grow Withania somnifera on our own biodynamic herb farm and use its roots to produce fresh organic tinctures in our cGMP manufacturing facility.

By bringing cultivation and manufacturing together on one site, we can maintain exceptional traceability and oversight throughout the production process.

Growing Withania somnifera on Our Biodynamic Farm

Our biodynamic approach places soil health at the heart of plant cultivation. We recognise that healthy soil is fundamental to growing healthy plants, and we work to support the natural vitality of the land through sustainable agricultural practices.  Growing medicinal herbs ourselves gives us greater control over their cultivation and allows us to understand the journey of each plant from the field onwards.

Careful cultivation and appropriate harvesting are essential parts of producing a quality botanical raw material.  Our farm is home to more than 80 medicinal herbs, giving us a unique opportunity to connect sustainable agriculture with the manufacture of herbal medicines and preparations.

From Root Harvest to Fresh Organic Tincture

The journey from plant to tincture is central to our approach.  Rather than relying solely on externally sourced botanical material, we can grow Withania somnifera ourselves and use the roots as the starting material for our fresh organic tinctures. Harvesting, preparation and processing are important stages in this journey. Our approach focuses on maintaining a clear connection between the plant material we grow and the finished tincture we manufacture.  This farm-to-tincture model helps us deliver a high level of traceability, allowing us to link agricultural practices with the subsequent stages of production.

Manufacturing in Our cGMP Facility

Growing quality medicinal herbs is only part of the process. The manufacturing environment and quality controls are equally important.  At Rutland Biodynamics, we manufacture our herbal tinctures in our cGMP facility, combining our knowledge of medicinal plant cultivation with controlled manufacturing processes.

Our MHRA-approved laboratory plays a vital role in our quality assurance system. Batches are tested and assessed before release, supporting our commitment to producing consistent, quality-controlled herbal preparations.  By combining our own biodynamic farm with cGMP manufacturing and in-house quality control, we bring together agricultural experience and pharmaceutical manufacturing standards in one integrated operation.

Traceability from Field to Bottle

For customers sourcing herbal tinctures, understanding where the botanical material originates and how it is processed is increasingly important.  Our integrated approach offers a direct connection between the land on which our medicinal herbs grow and the facility where they are transformed into finished products.

This supports our commitment to:

  • Traceability: A clear connection between our cultivated medicinal herbs and their subsequent processing.
  • Sustainability: Biodynamic farming practices that place soil health and responsible land management at the centre of cultivation.
  • Quality: cGMP manufacturing processes supported by laboratory testing and quality assurance.
  • Expertise: Combining practical experience in medicinal herb cultivation with specialist tincture manufacturing.

Working with Nature to Produce Quality Herbal Tinctures

At Rutland Biodynamics, we believe that sustainable cultivation and rigorous manufacturing are complementary parts of producing quality herbal preparations.  Our Withania somnifera roots represent this philosophy in practice: grown on our own biodynamic farm and used to make fresh organic tinctures in our cGMP facility.  By connecting the farm, the manufacturing process and quality control, we aim to provide customers with confidence in the origin, handling and quality of our botanical products.
